Backsplash cost and coverage calculator for Toronto kitchens

Last updated: By The Slab Desk

A backsplash is the one kitchen surface nobody can size in their head. You know the length of your counter; the tiler bills square feet of wall. That gap is why the same kitchen gets a $600 quote and a $2,400 quote and the homeowner cannot tell which one is out of line. This does the coverage first and the money second.

Measure it, then price it

Run your tape along the counter, including the piece behind the range. That length and the height of the tiled band are the only two measurements a tiler needs to quote.

21 sq ft(1.95m²)

14 ft of run times 18in of height, divided by 12. That is the number on the tiler's quote.

$452 to $678

$511 to $766 once 13% HST goes on.

Backsplash supplied and installed$12 to $18 per sq ft installed (CAD) x 21, as published by RenoHouse (Toronto and GTA, 2026 backsplash tiling)
$252 to $378
Cutting the tile around each electrical outlet$50 to $75 per outlet (CAD) x 4, as published by RenoHouse (Toronto and GTA, 2026 backsplash tiling)
$200 to $300
13% HST
$59 to $88

That is under what a whole GTA kitchen usually costs.

Three Canadian sources (GMCO, Prime Tiling and RenoQuotes) put a whole kitchen backsplash at $800 to $3,000 installed. A figure below it usually means the run or the height is short. Check that you included the wall behind the range and any return onto a side wall.

Buy more tile than this. Cuts, breakage and lot-matching all eat into a box, and returning to a shop six weeks later for two more tiles rarely gets you the same dye lot. How much extra is a question for whoever is setting it, so this deliberately does not put a percentage on it.

How the coverage and the price are worked out

The coverage half is geometry and nothing else: your run in feet multiplied by the band height in inches, divided by twelve. Fourteen feet at the standard 18 inch height is 21 square feet of wall. The tool also prints that in square metres, because plenty of Canadian tile is sold and quoted metric even though the kitchen was framed in feet.

The money half multiplies that area by a rate a named Canadian company publishes, adds a charge for each outlet, and adds backerboard and tear-out where you tick them. The three installed tiers all come from RenoHouse (Toronto and GTA, 2026 backsplash tiling), whose 2026 page splits the Toronto market into exactly those bands. Two independent readings sit either side of them: Prime Tiling puts all-in GTA tiling at $20 to $40 per square foot and Zelta Floor and Design says to budget $30 to $45 for a backsplash specifically. Those were not averaged into one figure, because averaging two companies' advertised ranges produces a number neither of them stands behind.

One thing this tool refuses to do is put a percentage on tile overage. Every guide has a favourite number for it and none of the Canadian sources here publishes one, so rather than borrow a figure from somewhere and present it as researched, the page says to ask the person setting the tile. Layout drives it: a herringbone or a diagonal wastes far more off the end of every row than a straight running bond.

Collected August 2026. Nothing on this page is a Countertop Installers estimate, and where two companies disagreed the range was widened rather than split.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the square footage of a backsplash?

Measure the length of counter the tile will sit above in feet, including the section behind the range and any return onto a side wall, then multiply by the height of the tiled band in inches and divide by twelve. A 14 foot run at the standard 18 inch height is 21 square feet. This is the one measurement that lets you check a quote you have already been given, because square feet of wall is what a tiler prices against and length of counter is not.

How high should a kitchen backsplash be?

Eighteen inches is the standard, because base cabinets plus a countertop come to 36 inches and upper cabinets hang with their bottom edge at 54, which leaves exactly 18 inches of wall. Builders who hang the uppers at 52 or 56 inches give you a 16 or 20 inch band instead, so measure rather than assume. Behind a range or on a wall with no upper cabinets the zone runs 24 to 30 inches, and four inches is the minimum that does the actual job of keeping splashes off the drywall.

What does backsplash installation cost per square foot in Toronto?

It splits cleanly into three tiers. Straight-set subway or large-format ceramic runs $12 to $18 per square foot installed. Mosaic, herringbone or porcelain with mitred corners and metal trim runs $25 to $40. Natural stone slab, full-height marble, zellige or imported glass runs $45 to $60. Two other Toronto companies publish all-in tiling at $20 to $40 and a budget-to-allow of $30 to $45, which straddle those tiers rather than contradicting them.

Why does the tiler charge for each outlet?

Because every receptacle is a hole that has to be measured, cut and finished so the cover plate sits flat with no gap and no chipped edge. It runs $50 an outlet on ordinary tile and $75 on natural stone or large-format porcelain, where the cut is slower and the material is far less forgiving of a mistake. A galley kitchen with six outlets and two switches is a real $400 to $600 line, which is worth seeing on the quote rather than buried in it.

Do I need cement board behind a backsplash?

Not everywhere, but it is the right call in the wet and hot zones. Cement backerboard behind the sink and the range runs $5 to $10 per square foot supplied and installed. Tile set straight onto bare drywall is extremely common in this market and it is where wet-zone failures start, so if the quote you are holding does not mention the substrate, that is a question to ask before you sign it, not after the grout starts moving.

How much extra tile should I buy?

More than the coverage figure, and this tool deliberately does not put a percentage on it. Cuts, breakage and pattern layout all eat into a box, and a herringbone or a diagonal set wastes far more than a straight run. The real reason to over-buy is dye lots: tile is fired in batches, and coming back to the shop six weeks later for two more tiles rarely gets you the same lot. Ask whoever is setting it how much they want on site, because they are the one who knows the layout. Countertop Installers will not invent a number for it.
