Kitchen countertop cost calculator: every material, one kitchen
Last updated: By The Slab Desk
Seeing $23 and $250 in a per-square-foot table is abstract. Seeing $920 and $10,000 for the counter you are standing at is not. Enter your area once and every material is priced against it, cheapest to dearest, with the company that published each rate named in the row.
How big is the kitchen?
40 sq ft, cheapest to dearest installed, before tax
$920 to $10,000
That is a spread of $9,080, or 10.9 times, between the cheapest laminate and the dearest marble for the same kitchen. The material choice moves this number more than every other decision on the quote put together.

Cross-check: $4,500 to $7,500
Teccorp Stone (Toronto kitchen countertop cost guide) publishes $4,500 to $7,500 for a complete countertop replacement in a standard family kitchen. That figure was researched as a whole-project total, entirely separately from the per-square-foot rates in the table, so comparing them is a genuine test rather than the same sum twice. Your range overlaps it, which is what you want to see.
Every figure here is the surface only. Tear-out of the old top, the edge upgrade, each cut-out, plumbing disconnect and reconnect and a shop minimum on a small job all sit on top, and together they are usually four figures. The single-material calculators price those line by line.
Why these particular rates, and not the ones on the other calculators
This page uses the BROADEST published range for each material, and the single-material calculators use narrower, tiered ones. That is deliberate rather than inconsistent. "What will my kitchen cost" is a question about how far apart the materials are, and it wants the whole market span. "What will granite cost" is a question about a specific job, and it wants the level you have actually chosen. Answering both from one row would have made one of them wrong.
Three of the seven rates, quartz and granite and marble, come from the same researched countertop installation guide, which keeps the stone comparison on a common basis rather than pitting one company's optimistic range against another's cautious one. Laminate, solid surface, porcelain and butcher block come from their own material guides. Collected August 2026, all from named Canadian companies, most of them GTA fabricators this directory also lists.
Butcher block is the one row that is not comparable and the page says so three times: in the table, in the spread calculation, and here. No Canadian source publishes an installed rate for it. What exists is a Toronto millwork shop's price list for finished custom butcher block, which is material only, and fitting is extra. It is excluded from the cheapest-to-dearest gap for that reason, because ranking a material-only figure against six installed ones reads as a saving that has not been earned yet.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a new kitchen countertop cost in Toronto?
- For a standard 40 square foot kitchen the surface alone runs roughly $920 at the laminate end to $10,000 at the marble end, before tax and before any of the extras. The published whole-project totals bracket that usefully: Tec Corp Stone puts a small condo kitchen at $2,800 to $4,500 complete and a standard family kitchen at $4,500 to $7,500, both published as project figures rather than derived from a rate. If your own arithmetic lands far outside those, re-measure the area before you conclude anything about the quote.
Which countertop material gives the biggest jump in price?
- The jump from any engineered or budget surface into natural stone. Laminate and butcher block sit in one band, solid surface and quartz in another, and granite, porcelain and marble in a third, and the step between the second and third is where most of the money is. Within stone the spread is enormous too: Toronto General Contractors puts granite at $75 to $175 installed while Better Marble puts marble at $90 to $250, and the top of the marble range is nearly three times the bottom of the granite one.
Why is butcher block shown differently from the others?
- Because no Canadian source publishes an installed rate for it. Its figure is a Toronto millwork shop's price for finished custom butcher block, which is material only, and fitting is extra. Ranking a material-only price alongside six installed prices without saying so would read as a saving that does not exist, so Countertop Installers flags the row on the page, excludes it from the cheapest-to-dearest spread, and states the reason rather than burying it in a footnote.
Does this include installation?
- The rates do, on six of the seven materials: they are supplied-and-installed figures, so templating, fabrication and fitting are already inside them. What is not inside any of them is the rest of the quote. Tearing out and disposing of the old countertop, upgrading the edge profile off the standard eased edge, each sink and cooktop cut-out, disconnecting and reconnecting the plumbing, and a shop minimum on a small job are all separate lines, and together they are usually a four-figure addition.
Why are the ranges so wide?
- Because each one spans a whole market rather than a single product. The quartz range covers a budget import colour and a premium Caesarstone series; the granite range covers a stocked builder black and an imported exotic. Those are genuinely different purchases sharing a name. This page uses the broadest published range per material on purpose, because the question it answers is how far apart the materials are, and narrowing the ranges to a mid-tier figure would hide exactly the thing you came to see.
Should I use the low end of the range as my budget?
- No. The low end is the cheapest grade of that material, quoted by whichever company advertises the lowest, with nothing else on the job. Almost no real kitchen lands there. Read the low end as a floor that proves what is possible, the high end as the ceiling, and expect a templated quote to sit between them and nearer the middle. Then add the extras above, because those are what separate two bids for the same kitchen.
