Kitchen countertop warranties in Ontario: who covers what
Last updated: By The Slab Desk

A countertop job can involve two warranties: one from the maker of the material and one from the company that installed it. The two can differ in length, in what they exclude and in who can claim. This directory has no warranty field for its listings, so ask each company for its terms in writing before you pay a deposit.
Two warranties, two issuers
A manufacturer's warranty is about the material. Caesarstone Canada's lifetime warranty, for example, applies to repairs and replacements of defective materials, and only where professionals it has authorized fabricated and installed them. A workmanship warranty is about the fitting, and the installer sets its length. One renovation company in this directory puts the split in a single line on its website: "1-Year Workmanship Warranty. Manufacturer warranties apply separately."
Some failures sit on the boundary between the two. Take a seam that opens, a top that rocks on cabinets that were not level, or a crack at the corner of a sink cut-out. Each could be argued as a material fault or a fitting fault. Ask each company to say in writing which of those it covers. Ask too whether sealing and everyday care sit inside either document.
On some jobs a third company is involved. A slab yard sells the material, a fabricator cuts it and an installer sets it. Buying the slab separately is possible, but then ask who carries the risk if a slab breaks or turns out too small for the layout, and who plans the seams. Each extra company adds a warranty boundary to settle before anyone cuts.
What a quartz maker's warranty asks of you
Caesarstone Canada's warranty page sets out conditions that are easy to miss. It says the lifetime warranty is made available to the original owner of a single-family residence and goes into effect on the original date of installation. You must register to activate it, and proof of payment for an entire purchase is required. You must also request service within 30 days of any material failure.
The fabricator matters as well. The same page says only fabricators the maker has certified can install your surface to get the lifetime warranty. It also lists approved appliances and applications. Induction cooktops qualify, except flush-mounted models that sit completely level with the surface. All sinks qualify except built-in sinks or sinks made from the maker's own material.
So ask a quartz fabricator whether it is certified by the brand it is cutting. Check the sink and cooktop against the maker's list before the template visit. Other brands write their own terms, so read the document for the slab you are buying. The guide to what quartz cannot take covers heat and sunlight, where the maker's warranty also decides the answer.
What one national retailer publishes
Home Depot Canada's countertop installation page bases its costs on Ontario pricing. It says all replacement countertop installation projects from its Home Services come with a 1-year parts and labour warranty. Laminate comes with a one-year warranty for manufacturer's defects. The retailer's process collects a small deposit before the in-home measure, and that deposit is applied to the cost of the installation.
The page lists longer terms by material, each in its own wording. It says additional product warranties, ranging from 10 years to lifetime coverage, are available depending on the countertop. It describes a limited lifetime residential warranty on quartz as available exclusively to its customers. It lists a 15-year transferable warranty for all solid surface countertop installations, also exclusive to its customers, and a 25-year warranty on all Dekton surfaces it installs. The page does not say which failures those longer terms cover or whether labour is part of them, so ask.
On laminate, both terms on that page are one year. Where water gets into a laminate top at the sink cut-out or a mitred corner joint, ask how those joints were cut and sealed, since that is the installer's work. Only 8 of the 876 listings in this directory sit under laminate countertops, and the laminate cost guide lists published laminate prices.
What the companies in this directory advertise
This directory has no warranty field. Warranty wording still turns up in the text captured from company websites: 84 of the 876 listings carry some. Counting each company website once, with Home Depot's two sites as one, leaves 77 websites. For 42 of the 77 the captured text shows no length, often just a menu link to a warranty page.
The other 35 state a length, and only 8 of those tie it to a countertop, a slab or a surface brand. The rest attach to cabinetry (10), a renovation as a whole (14) or other trades such as tub reglazing (3). Of the 8 countertop terms, two are workmanship warranties, at one year and five years. One is Caesarstone's own showroom, whose lifetime material warranty is set out above. The other five run from 15 years to lifetime, and their captured text does not say whether the fitting is covered.
A length on a home page does not show the exclusions, so ask for the document behind it. The directory also holds no founding date for any listing. Ontario's page on home renovation rights says reputation and length of time in business are more important than a warranty or guarantee. The licensing guide covers what the records say about licences. None of the listings carries an email address, so ask by phone or through the company's website, and get the answer in writing.
What Ontario's rules add
Ontario's page on home renovation rights says any home renovation contract worth more than $50 must be in writing. Its list of what the contract should include has a clear description of any warranties. Under the Consumer Protection Act, if an estimate is included as part of a home renovation contract, the final price cannot be more than 10% over the original estimate. The exception is new work or a new price you have agreed to.
The same page recommends keeping down-payments to no more than 10% and never paying the full amount before the work is done. It says this protects you from losing money if the company goes out of business before finishing. It also suggests a local company, which may make it easier to enforce a warranty or have follow-up work done. The retailer above takes a small deposit before its measure, so ask for its warranty terms in writing before paying even that.
Countertops that came with a newly built home follow a different route. Tarion says that by law, all new homes built in Ontario are provided with a warranty by the builder. Tarion's coverage page says the one-year warranty begins on the date of possession, or the occupancy date for a condominium, and includes items such as defects in work and material. For a countertop the builder installed, start with the builder and Tarion's claims process.
Maintenance terms and the warranty
Ask whether your written warranty makes sealing a condition of coverage. Countertop Pro GTA says granite requires sealing every 1 to 3 years to prevent staining. Pacific West Floor Decor recommends resealing every two years and puts the total cost of a resealing job at $200 to $350. Follow whatever schedule your own document sets, and keep a note of each date you seal.
Pacific West Floor Decor also describes a check you can do between those dates. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the counter. If the water beads up, there is no need to seal yet; if the counter absorbs it, it needs resealing. Use the test to decide on extra sealing between scheduled dates, not to skip one.
Wood carries its own care terms. Living Edge Kitchen Bath warns that wood can swell and shrink in extreme humidity or dryness. It suggests keeping the home humidified in winter to preserve a butcher block. Ask for the written care requirement along with the warranty. In this directory, 120 listings sit under granite countertops, and the granite cost guide covers resealing costs.
One company for the cabinets and the countertop
Easy Renovation notes that countertops cannot be measured until cabinets are in place, so the two trades work in sequence. When one company does both, there is one less handoff. A cabinet installer and a stone fabricator can no longer each blame the other for an uneven gap or a sagging run. It can also put both parts under one warranty. Some of the lengths advertised in this directory attach to cabinetry alone, so check that the countertop is named in the document.
In this directory, 224 listings sit under cabinet and countertop installation. Ask any of them for the countertop as its own line, with its own warranty terms. The guide to three comparable quotes lists warranty conditions and exclusions among the lines to put on every quote. The combined cost guide covers how those packages are priced.
What to ask before you pay a deposit
Put these questions to each company with the quote, and get the answers in writing:
- Who issues the material warranty, does it need registering, and in whose name?
- Is the fabricator certified by the slab's brand, where the brand requires it?
- How long does the workmanship warranty run, and does it start at installation or at final payment?
- Does it cover seam separation, a chip at a cut-out edge and a top that moves as the cabinets settle?
- Is the coverage transferable if the house sells?
- What care does the document require, and who does it?
- Who do you call about a defect, how fast is a site visit, and who pays the plumber if the sink has to come out?
Transferability varies by document. Caesarstone's lifetime warranty is made available to the original owner. Home Depot's page calls its solid surface warranty transferable. Tarion's one-year coverage applies even if the home is sold.
Read each document against the exclusion list in the quote. On installation day, run through the checks before signing off an install. If a defect shows up later, report it within the window the document sets.
Frequently asked questions
Does a countertop warranty cover the slab or the installation?
- It can be either, and one job can come with two documents. A manufacturer's warranty covers defects in the material. The installer's workmanship warranty covers the fitting. A crack at a sink cut-out can be argued either way, so get each company to say in writing which failures it covers.
What warranty comes with a laminate countertop in Ontario?
- It depends on the seller, so ask for the terms in writing. Home Depot Canada's countertop installation page says laminate comes with a one-year warranty for manufacturer's defects. It also says all replacement installations from its Home Services carry a 1-year parts and labour warranty. Other sellers set their own lengths and exclusions.
Does a quartz warranty have to be registered?
- For Caesarstone in Canada, yes. Its warranty page says you must register to activate the warranty, and proof of payment for an entire purchase is required. The lifetime warranty applies only to material fabricated and installed by professionals it has authorized, and service must be requested within 30 days of any material failure. Other brands set their own conditions.
What does Ontario require of a renovation contract?
- Ontario's guidance says any home renovation contract worth more than $50 must be in writing, and the contract should include a clear description of any warranties. If an estimate is part of the contract, the final price cannot be more than 10% over it unless you agreed to new work or a new price. Keep the estimate attached to the signed contract.
Can missed sealing affect a warranty claim?
- It can, if the written terms make sealing a condition of coverage, so ask for the care clause before you pay a deposit. Published intervals for granite vary: Countertop Pro GTA says every 1 to 3 years, and Pacific West Floor Decor recommends every two years. Follow the schedule your own document sets, and keep a record of each sealing.
