How to get three countertop installation quotes you can compare

Last updated: By The Slab Desk

Three countertop quotes are comparable only when all three price the same written scope: slab and thickness, edge profile, cut-outs, tear-out, delivery and tax. Send one scope sheet unchanged to three GTA shops, compare the itemised lines rather than the totals, and treat any number given before templating (the fabricator's on-site measurement) as an estimate.

Why three countertop quotes are not comparable by default

Stone Wizards lists what a standard installed price from a Toronto fabricator typically includes: slab material, CNC fabrication (computer-guided cutting), a standard edge profile, one undermount sink cut-out, delivery, installation and seaming (joining pieces on site). It says that inclusion list is standard across the Toronto fabricator market, and that removal of old countertops, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, backsplash and premium edge profiles are almost always quoted separately. Most of what separates two quotes sits in that second list.

Teccorp Stone makes the same point from the buyer's side. One contractor may include templating, standard cut-outs and installation while another lists those items separately, and Teccorp's advice is to adjust quotations to the same scope before comparing their totals. Asked whether a square foot price includes installation, it answers "not always".

The published rates are also wide enough that a bottom line on its own tells you little. For installed quartz per square foot:

  • Stone Wizards: $45 to $180 in Toronto, with most of its own Stone Wizards Select projects at $45 to $95.
  • Stone Valley Countertops: $65 to $85 for A-grade, $85 to $105 for B-grade, and $110 to $180 and above for premium.
  • Natural Stone City: $85 to $160 in Toronto and the GTA for mid-range to premium quartz.

Three shops can each quote inside those ranges and still be pricing three different jobs. The countertop installation cost guide and the quartz cost guide set those published rows side by side.

A per square foot rate usually covers the slab and the standard work; tear-out, backsplash and upgraded edges are priced on their own lines.

The lines a scope sheet has to fix

A scope sheet is one page that every shop prices without editing. Write it before anyone visits, and send the same page to each of the three countertop installation companies on your shortlist. It should name:

  • The exact slab: material, brand or collection, colour, finish and thickness. Stone Valley Countertops notes that 2cm is standard for GTA homes and that 3cm adds cost.
  • The edge profile. Stone Valley Countertops includes the standard eased edge (a lightly rounded square edge), and Better Marble's GTA marble breakdown lists edge profiles as included or $10 to $30 per foot. The edge profile guide shows what each name looks like.
  • The cut-out count. Stone Valley Countertops prices an undermount sink cut-out at $250 to $350 and a cooktop cut-out at $250 to $450. Natural Stone City lists sink cut-outs at $150 to $500 per cut-out.
  • Tear-out and disposal of the old top. Josh Kitchen puts Toronto removal at $200 to $500, and Better Marble's GTA breakdown lists $125 to $250.
  • Backsplash scope. Stone Valley Countertops prices a full-height backsplash at $900 to $2,200 and above, which is a second stone job inside a countertop quote.
  • Waterfall panels, where the stone turns down the side of an island to the floor. Stone Valley Countertops prices a mitred waterfall edge at $900 to $1,800 per side.
  • Templating and delivery. Natural Stone City says some shops charge $100 to $300 for custom templates or specialised fabrication, and puts transportation at $50 to $200.
  • Whether the number is tax in or tax extra.

Teccorp Stone's own pre-approval checklist adds the lines homeowners forget: seam locations, pattern or vein matching, cabinet preparation, plumbing and other connected trades, payment terms, and warranty conditions and exclusions. Add access too: Teccorp notes that elevator access and difficult carrying routes can change the final scope, including seam positions and section sizes.

Who measures matters as much as what is listed. A figure built from your own tape measure is a planning number. Teccorp Stone says base cabinets and islands should be stable, level, secured and in their permanent positions before final templating, and that final pricing depends on confirmed measurements. The template appointment checklist covers what to finish first. On timing, Stone Wizards lists a typical turnaround of 3 to 5 days, and Stone Valley Countertops says it offers a one-week turnaround from template to installation. Three quotes taken before the cabinets are in are three estimates, not three prices.

Keep the sheet after you sign. The same lines become the checklist for the walk-through before you sign off the install.

Four-step flow: write one scope sheet, send the same sheet to three shops, compare the quotes line by line, confirm the price at template
One scope sheet goes to every shop unchanged, the quotes are compared line by line, and the price is confirmed at the template visit.

Why do countertop installers' prices differ between quotes?

Inside the published ranges above, the gap between two real quotes usually comes from scope, area and pricing basis rather than from one shop being expensive.

Here is an illustration, not a published figure. Take a quote at $45 per square foot that leaves out tear-out, delivery and the sink cut-out, and a second at $60 per square foot that includes all three. On a 35 square foot kitchen, our arithmetic puts the first at $1,575 and the second at $2,100. Add Josh Kitchen's $200 to $500 removal and Stone Valley's $250 to $350 sink cut-out to the first, and it reaches $2,025 to $2,425 before any delivery charge. The cheaper rate can end up with the larger invoice. The $60 quote looks worse on the phone and may be the lower bill.

The second difference is the area each quote assumes. Stone Wizards works its Toronto example from a standard kitchen with 30 to 40 square feet of countertop. A rate means nothing until it is multiplied by your own area. Put your own measured square footage on the scope sheet and ask each shop to confirm it at template rather than quote against a different number.

The third is material-only pricing next to installed pricing. Natural Stone City says basic quartz slabs start around $40 to $60 per square foot as material only, while its installed figures for the GTA start higher. An advertised slab price and an installed quote can describe the same kitchen. Ask each shop for one installed total, itemised, rather than a rate.

Before the calls, the kitchen countertop cost calculator and the countertop removal cost tool give you a planning range to hold the three quotes against. They are planning aids, not quotes.

Two quotes that tick the same lines can be compared; a quote missing tear-out or delivery is cheaper only on paper.

Whole-kitchen totals as a sanity check

Some shops quote a project total rather than a rate, and two GTA fabricators publish whole-kitchen bands that make a useful cross-check. Teccorp Stone gives approximately $2,800 to $4,500 for a small condo kitchen, $4,500 to $7,500 for a standard family kitchen and $7,500 to $12,000 or more for a large kitchen with an island. It calls these planning ranges rather than fixed quotations. Stone Valley Countertops gives $2,400 to $3,800 for a small condo kitchen and $3,800 to $6,500 for a standard family kitchen, in quartz. A quote far outside both bands is either carrying work the others left out or leaving out work the others carried.

Very small jobs break this check. A vanity or bar top can be priced against a shop's minimum rather than its rate, which the guide to minimum job charges in the GTA explains. For granite, the granite cost guide holds the published per square foot rows.

Put tax in or tax out on the same page

Better Marble's GTA marble cost table lists HST (Ontario's harmonized sales tax) at 13 percent as its own line on top of slab, fabrication, installation, cut-outs and removal. If one shop quotes tax in and another tax extra, the two totals cannot be ranked until both are on the same basis; as our own arithmetic, 13 percent of Teccorp Stone's $4,500 standard kitchen low end is $585. The guide to HST on countertop quotes works through the full tax picture.

What the directory can and cannot tell you before you call

The directory lists 876 companies, and 848 of them sit in at least one of its 12 categories. Of those, 300 are listed under countertop installation and 175 under quartz countertops. Geography narrows a shortlist fastest: counting every record in the area, not just installers, Vaughan holds 97 and Mississauga 93, the two largest totals in the index. Within countertop installation alone, each of those two areas holds 37.

The contact fields decide how the scope sheet travels. A website is on record for 783 of the 876 companies and a phone number for 861, and no email address is recorded for any of them, so expect to send the sheet through a contact form.

Ratings set a rough floor and not much more. The 845 rated companies average 4.7 with a median of 4.9, and the median rated company has 28 reviews; the index holds 42,833 reviews in all. What the index does not record is which shops itemise, what they charge for tear-out or how long they take, which is why the written scope is the tool a homeowner actually controls.

Frequently asked questions

How many countertop quotes are worth getting in the GTA?

Three, all priced against one written scope. With fewer, there is nothing to cross-check. The scope sheet matters more than the count, because the scope drives most of the gap between two numbers.

What should a scope sheet say about tear-out?

It should be its own line with a dollar figure. Fabricators usually leave removal out of the square foot rate. For planning, Josh Kitchen puts Toronto removal at $200 to $500, while Better Marble's GTA breakdown shows $125 to $250, so ask each shop to name its own number in writing.

Why does one shop quote per square foot and another a project total?

Both formats are normal, and each hides different things. A rate needs your area and an inclusion list before it becomes a total, while a project total, like Teccorp Stone's $4,500 to $7,500 standard family kitchen range, needs the same list before you can check it. Convert both to one itemised scope before deciding which is lower.

Does tax treatment change which quote is cheaper?

Yes, when one quote includes tax and another does not. Better Marble lists HST at 13 percent as a separate line, so a pre-tax total and a tax-included total are not the same kind of number. Ask every shop to state the same basis.

Is a quote given over the phone binding?

No, it is a planning figure until templating. Teccorp Stone says final pricing depends on confirmed measurements, taken once the base cabinets and any island are stable, level and in their permanent positions.
