How to install a dishwasher under a quartz countertop

A dishwasher under a quartz countertop is fixed to the cabinet sides beside the opening, never screwed up into the stone. That makes the cabinets, the slab thickness and the template visit (when the fabricator measures the cabinets for cutting) part of the dishwasher job, so choose the appliance before the countertop is measured.

Can a dishwasher be screwed into a quartz countertop?

No. Bosch's installation instructions for its dishwasher mounting brackets show two methods: a top mount for a wooden under-counter and a side mount for a stone under-counter. For a stone top, the brackets are slipped through the side slots and bent so they hold. The unit is then screwed to the enclosure, meaning the cabinets on either side, with pre-drilled holes recommended. Nothing is fastened to the stone.

Check the manual for your own model before you buy, since bracket designs differ between makers. The side method needs cabinet sides (the gables) to the left and right of the opening that can take a screw.

The order of work for a new kitchen:

  • Set and level the base cabinets on both sides of the opening.
  • Have the countertop templated, fabricated and installed.
  • Slide the dishwasher in and level it. Bosch has the installer turn the front feet and a centre screw at the back until the unit sits level, then fit the locking screws.
  • Fix the side brackets to the cabinet sides, pre-drilling the holes.
  • Connect the water, drain and power as the manual for your model sets out, then run a cycle and look underneath for drips.

Why this is a cabinet question as much as a stone one

Because the brackets land on cabinetry, the dishwasher sits where two trades meet. In this directory, 224 records are listed under cabinet and countertop installation and 300 under countertop installation, and only 25 carry both labels. Sky Kitchen Cabinets in Mississauga, for example, is listed under cabinet and countertop installation and quartz countertops.

The directory records the categories a company lists, not how it splits the work. So ask directly: will the crew that sets the cabinets also fix the dishwasher, or does that fall to someone else after the stone is in?

Templating waits for the cabinets and the appliance opening

Teccorp Stone, writing about Ontario installations, says when final templating normally happens. The base cabinets, island, finished panels and relevant appliance openings should already be installed, level, secured and in their permanent positions. It also says the approved template becomes the fabrication reference, and that changes to cabinets, sinks, appliances or overhangs after templating may require revised measurements or fabrication.

That is why the dishwasher decision belongs early. Before the template visit, settle:

  • Which model is going in, and whether it is a standard width or a narrower one
  • Whether it is panel-ready (built to take a cabinet door on its front), so the fronts have to line up across it
  • Whether the gables beside it are full cabinet ends that brackets can fix into
  • Where the water, drain and power connections will come through

A dishwasher opening that is still undecided at template time cannot be recorded accurately, and moving it afterwards is exactly the kind of change Teccorp Stone warns about. The site's guide to preparing for your template appointment covers the rest of that list, and the order of trades around the sink is in undermount sink or countertop first.

The dishwasher opening is settled before the template, because the template drives fabrication.

2cm or 3cm quartz, and what sits above the opening

GTA fabricators do not agree on which slab thickness is standard, and the answer changes what the dishwasher is looking at. Stone Wizards says 3cm is the current industry standard for kitchen countertops, needs no additional support underneath, and that most Toronto kitchen projects use it. The same page says 2cm slabs cost less but often require plywood support and edge build-up (extra material under the front edge), which can offset some of the material savings with extra labour. Stone Valley Countertops in Mississauga says the opposite: 2cm is standard for GTA homes, and 3cm adds cost and requires heavier lifting.

Over a dishwasher opening, the thicker slab spans the gap on its own, with nothing but stone above the appliance. The thinner slab on a plywood sub-top (a sheet of plywood under the stone) has a wood layer running across the top of the opening, and the appliance's top brackets may reach it. That does not make top-mounting the right call by default. The plywood is there to carry the stone, not to restrain an appliance, so confirm with the fabricator before anyone screws into it.

Ask every quote which thickness it assumes and whether support build-up is included. The answer changes the price, which is set out tier by tier in the quartz countertop cost guide for Toronto, and it changes what sits above the dishwasher. Listing the thickness on a shared scope sheet is the easiest way to keep three quotes comparable.

Height, levelling and why the cutting stays in the shop

The vertical stack under a stone top is unforgiving. Cabinet height, slab thickness, any plywood build-up and the appliance's adjustable feet all have to add up to a space the machine fits inside. The stone is the one part that cannot be trimmed on install day.

Plan on no cutting of the stone in your kitchen. Cutting stone raises silica dust, and Ontario's Ministry of Labour lists silica as a designated substance, a hazard with its own rules, under O. Reg. 490/09, a regulation that sets exposure limits and requires an assessment and a control program. The ministry adds that this regulation does not apply on construction projects, where the general duty to protect workers applies instead.

Levelling also has to happen in the right order. The cabinets are shimmed level before templating, and the slab is cut to that line. Suppose the dishwasher is fitted afterwards and its feet are wound up to close a gap at the top. The appliance then sits out of line with the cabinets beside it, and its door no longer sits flush with their fronts. Setting the appliance height against the finished cabinet line before the counter arrives avoids that. Before signing off, run through the checks before signing off an install.

Replacing a dishwasher under a countertop that is already in

Replacing a dishwasher under a top that is already in works to a different constraint. The countertop is fixed, the opening is whatever it is, and the new machine has to clear the underside of the top. A top with plywood build-up leaves less vertical space than a bare slab does. Measure the opening at the front and the back before buying.

The mounting method has to follow what is actually above and beside the opening, not the manual's default. Where the manual assumes a wood surface above, check whether it offers a side-mounting option. Where the gables beside the opening are not full cabinet ends, ask the appliance installer what bracket kit ties into the cabinet frame instead. Nothing should be drilled into the stone. Who handles the water and drain connections is its own question, covered in who disconnects the plumbing on countertop day.

Where the countertop itself is the problem, removal is its own line. Josh Kitchen quotes Toronto countertop removal at $200 to $500, and Better Marble's GTA cost breakdown lists old countertop removal at $125 to $250. The countertop removal cost tool and the countertop installation cost guide break down the rest of a replacement. To find a fabricator for the top itself, start with quartz countertop companies in Mississauga or Vaughan.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dishwasher be screwed directly into a quartz countertop?

No, fix it to the cabinet sides instead. Bosch's bracket instructions call for a side mount under a stone countertop and a top mount only under a wooden one. Bracket designs differ between makers, so read your model's manual before you buy.

Does the countertop get templated before or after the dishwasher opening is set?

After the cabinets and the opening are set. Teccorp Stone treats the approved template as the reference the shop cuts from, so the opening has to be in its final position, level and secured when the fabricator measures.

Is 2cm or 3cm quartz better over a dishwasher?

GTA fabricators disagree on which is standard. Stone Wizards favours 3cm because it needs no support underneath, while Stone Valley Countertops says 2cm is standard in GTA homes. A 2cm top often sits on plywood, which changes what is above the appliance, so ask which one a quote assumes.

Can one company handle both the cabinets and the countertop?

Some list both kinds of work. In this directory, 224 records sit under cabinet and countertop installation and 25 of them also carry the separate countertop installation label. Ask any company who fixes the dishwasher once the stone is down.

What if I am replacing a dishwasher under an existing stone top?

The new machine has to fit the opening as it is. Measure the height under the top at the front and back, check whether a plywood sub-top is present, and use a side-mount or cabinet-frame bracket rather than drilling into the stone.
